Error of Man: Detroit lesbian Bishop resigns

Local Bishop Resigns After Revealing Same-Sex Marriage (Part 1)

By Donald James | Michigan Chronicle

ddd1Bishop Allyson D. Nelson Abrams, outgoing secretary of the Detroit Council of Baptist Pastors, is a Christian spiritual leader, national speaker, theological teacher and author who has built a strong reputation in African-American faith-based communities around Detroit and across the nation. For more than five years, she has served as pastor of Zion Progress Baptist Church, located in downtown Detroit. On Friday, October 18, 2013, Bishop Abrams will official step down as pastor.

Abrams’ decision to leave Zion Progress is based on the revelation she made to her congregation on Sunday, Oct. 6. She announced that she is now in a same-sex marriage. “With some buzz going around about my same-sex marriage, I wanted my church to hear from me before members heard it from other sources. I had already talked with my deacons,” said Abrams. “I knew that it would eventually get to my congregation. So I stood in my pulpit and openly talked about love, Christ, and that I was married, and it was a same-gender marriage.”

According to the 43-year-old pastor, there was a myriad of reactions from the congregation. She said some expressed disappointment and many expressed love and support. Abrams said the next day, a groundswell of calls poured in, some, said Abrams, from members who have not actively attended Zion Progress Baptist Church in years.

“Some members asked me to stay. Some said if I was leaving, they would go with me to another church. Some members even said that if I was going out of the state, they would go to another church.”

Abrams quickly realized that her same-gender marriage had the potential to cause a deep divide, so deep that even families in the church were split on which side of the issue to stand on.

“It is not my desire to split the church,” Abrams said, during an exclusive interview at the Michigan Chronicle office.

“It really hurts me because I don’t want to be the reason for the church to split, and potentially for family members to be at odds with one another. Therefore, I felt that it was in the best interest of everyone to resign.”

Abrams also severed ties with other faith-based organizations in the region. After a nine-year stint with the Council of Baptist Pastors of Detroit, she stepped down, citing that she didn’t want to be the topic of proposed meetings on the issue, which could have ultimately caused a rift within the Council.

“I want to make it clear that I was not forced out or put out as some rumors have suggested,” said Abrams. “I’ve had many calls from people in Indiana, Illinois, Ohio and other places who have asked me about leaving the Council. I was not put out; I resigned.”

In addition, Abrams removed her church from the Baptist Missionary and Education State Convention, as well as the Progressive National Baptist Convention. She also stepped down from her co-editorship of the nationally published Progress National Baptist Convention magazine, The Baptist Progress.

After several decades of serving and leading in the African-American faith community, Abrams knew that her marital status would not sit well with everyone.

Sin is never satisfied!!! think about it these lgbt members are continueingly fighting for rights to sin. they gain one right and fight some more. This self proclaimed bishop stirred up all this maddness for her Daddy’s ( satan) cause and it will continue for years to come from this one action. Now you the world sees this church devided when it has been that way from it’s conception with her in the pulpit. Where the head goes the body will follow so you better know that those who follow this maddness also have those same demons with them. I agree with all comments but I will also keep studying God’s word so that I will continue to know these demons by the fruit they bare. Or should I say lack there of. Be Blessed

So true Michelle. But to be honest…when she made this comment, “It really hurts me because I don’t want to be the reason for the church to split, and potentially for family members to be at odds with one another. Therefore, I felt that it was in the best interest of everyone to resign.”, it really shows how deceived she is. She really doesn’t see that the word of God tells us that in these times, this will occur. So it’s not she who causes division, but the puppet master Satan who she has chosen to follow. I pray that God will continue to use those who are willing to spread His truth in the midst of this foolishness, because the time has come when people will definitely not endure sound doctrine, such as those who are willing to follow her. God Bless.

2 Ti 3:1 This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come.
2 Ti 3:2 For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy,
2 Ti 3:3 Without natural affection, truce breakers, false accusers, incontinent, fierce, despisers of those that are good,
    2 Ti 3:4 Traitors, heady, high minded, lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God;
2 Ti 3:5 Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away.
2 Ti 3:6 For of this sort are they which creep into houses, and lead captive silly women laden with sins, led away with divers lusts,
2 Ti 3:7 Ever learning, and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth. Amen

We are living in a dark world but at the same time as children of God”s light, we must cry out and pray to our merciful Saviour.

    What K said:

“I truly don’t believe that situations like this are about position or rights. They are about setting precedence for future infiltrations. They’re about weakening the walls so that in the future the fight will be easier…and easier…and easier. These women don’t want to be bishops in as much as they want to be able to say eureka or I made it. When one makes it its not so insurmountable for the next. They have a machine behind them using every opportunity to forward its agenda.”

This is one of the best explanations and insights I’ve read regarding what’s going on today not only in churches and among believers throughout every denomination but society as well! Soon the day is coming when you don’t worship at the altar of secularism you will be condemned! We walk in the realm of the deceiver!

I read something recently about the scripture in1tim: 9-12. I don’t know if it’s true, but this website states the women Paul was talking about we’re false prophets who were preaching a bad word to the people. From my understanding, the website is saying that the Paul was only addressing these women at Corinth, not banning all women from preaching the Gospel in church. If the historical part is true, then it sounds like the people who put this information on the site believe that women can preach. What I don’t believe, however, is that preaching is synonymous with being a Pastor. I do believe that a woman can share the Gospel with all people.

In another case, I saw a video on YouTube where a female pastor, wearing a man’s precher suit, stated that she doesn’t agree with the scripture in 1Timothy because when Christ arose and Mary was the first one to discover the empty tomb, she told the first disciples she could find. Male disciples at that. However, I think she also missed something important. Paul says women are not to usurp authority over the man in the church, so once again, I don’t see how she equates Mary’s experience with having authority over men.

These things came to mind when reading this news article. I’ve always pondered the message Paul gives us in this passage and it keeps coming up in different ways. I’d also like to know if this passage is not just talking about authority in the church but also positions in the workplace/career field. It doesn’t seem so to me, but I’m just curious. I appreciate your responses. God bless!

It is clear that this woman is lost in her understanding of creation role, very sad to see that the devil has hoodwinked her from the word of God. And for all of those who support her sin, please ask the Creator to remove the emotional scales from your eyes.

    1. snooop1e

If she is saved (we are saved by faith in Jesus Christ not by being free from sin) Why are people judging her? Are we saved by faith alone in Jesus Christ or do we earn salvation through works righteousness? Which is it? Jesus condemned divorce and remarriage and said anyone who divorces and remarries comits adultery but divorce and remarriage is allowed in the church even some Pastors have been divorced and remarried MULTIPLE times. If Jesus blood covers ALL sin why are Pastors allowed to live with a third or fourth wife in adultery but this Bishop is condemned? Why the double standard?

      1. Nikki

It is only a double standard for those who live a double standard. This woman and those living in adultery are cut from the same clothe. They live without repentance. Jesus’ blood is sufficient for all those who believe and He states to not be deceived those who practice righteousness are righteous and those who practice lawlessness are lawless (in so many words). Many are deceived into believing they have Christ yet their lives are not transformed there is no holiness. We are to be holy because our Father in heaven is holy. You need to get in your word honey because scripture is clear we are to judge and excommunicate those who are in willful sin. Read 2Cor 5. Please study to show yourself approved and see what Jesus has to say about this, what every prophet and law has to say.

      2. Nikki

People are often trying to defend sin. Why are we judging this one and why are we judging that one. As a believer, I want to be judged righteously. If I am out of order, then I pray that God will allow me to recognize my sin and not all sin to have such a strong hold that I refuse to see it, or God forbid, choose that sin over God. If someone judges me unjustly and the Holy Spirit reveals this go me, I then pray for that person. When it’s all said and done, it’s not what man calls us that will determine our eternity, but what God calls us. Are we His child, or the child of the enemy? Your lifestyle will answer that. Homosexuality is a sinful lifestyle. Just as living in an adulterous relationship or relationship without being married. They all will have the same end without choosing to repent and turning away from the send, and following Christ. The choice is yours. Choose wisely.

  6. Roberto

A woman cannot hold the office of Apostle, Bishop, or Pastor. Followers of Christ whenever you see that as a title before a woman, That should be an automatic “red flag.”
A Bishop is a Pastor that is over several other Pastors and their congregation.

  7. Lawrence

Another sign of the end times foretold by the apostle Peter.
    2 Peter – Chapter 2

1:But there were false prophets also among the people, even as there shall be false teachers among you, who privily shall bring in damnable heresies, even denying the Lord that bought them, and bring upon themselves swift destruction

2:And many shall follow their pernicious ways; by reason of whom the way of truth shall be evil spoken of.

14:Having eyes full of adultery and that cannot cease from sin; beguiling unstable souls: an heart they have exercised with covetous practices; cursed children
    15:Which have forsaken the right way and are gone astray, following the way of Ba’-laam.the son of Bo’sor, who loved the wages of unrighteousness;

    1. Rosita

      Well said. AMEN

  8. K

I think sometimes the church looks at a thing too closely and misses the bigger picture. Yes this woman is delusional and living in sin but so is most of her congregation which is why she was able to be their leader. They chose her.

I think if we step back we would be able to see more clearly how diabolical and maniacal satan really is. He’s showing us that not only does he want the church, is in the church, but that he makes up majority of the church. Here’s the maniacal part – he installed a perverse women under the watchful eyes of sleeping Christians, ingratiated her into the various church ministries, made her likable and faithful, easy on the eyes, and seemingly non-judge mental. She and he partner probably started mentoring programs in the hood and gave out turkeys and gizzards every Thanksgiving on the 8th mile. Then when she’s won over the congregation, gotten the support of every abused women and struggling gay teen in the neighborhood this type of story is leaked so she can cash in I their sympathies and misplaced loyalties.

The church then sits with our mouthes wide open wondering how she got there in the first place and what can be done that wont make us look bad or unloving. Usually we ask people to step down or do nothing citing misquoted scriptures like “he who is without sin.” They usually are left alone but asked to go back in the quiet closet.

I truly don’t believe that situations like this are about position or rights. They are about setting precedence for future infiltrations. They’re about weakening the walls so that in the future the fight will be easier…and easier…and easier. These women don’t want to be bishops in as much as they want to be able to say eureka or I made it. When one makes it its not so insurmountable for the next. They have a machine behind them using every opportunity to forward its agenda.

I liken these women and those like them to an endless supply of suicide bombers.

  9. Joelynn

As usual with all that is going on in our time I am not surprised. And those that want to follow her on the broad path have itching ears. There is no way that anyone who is filled with the Holy Spirit would think that is right before God. I understand that for many women we are by God, natural teachers. Something I question quite often about teaching others outside of my home, being a witness for Jesus makes me happy and I love to share with others about the goodness of the Lord….Won’t elaborate on that, but many women will get where I’m coming from. But back to this heresy, Tiwanda I agree if there is something in a persons life that can keep them or us from doing Gods Will or being who God has called you to be then lay it aside and run your race. Well this is another act of the flesh for all to see the difference between those who are truly desiring to walk with God and those aren’t. I love every body, even if they don’t love me back but if it had to be exposed then just thank the Lord for it and keep teaching the Word, Keep lifting up Jesus, Keep praying and believing because it is working. When situations like this come about I rejoice because God is working things in us and working things out of us/Church. Thanks EX Ministries, and may God continue to Bless u all!!!! I truly believe that for us to read this story, and recognize that this is what people are claiming to be apart of the church/the body and it isn’t, because the word does say that those who do such things will not inherit the Kingdom! I hope she and her partner hear the gospel, turn from their wicked ways and be saved by Gods grace.

  10. Jeane K

First of all this woman is NOT a Bishop, PLEASE read the Bibles definition of what one is, maybe that’s part of the problem the apostate church allowing what’s NOT Biblical in the pulpit. And God did say He was going to ‘expose’ some things starting with the ‘body’ as well. It’s either God’s way or the devil’s folks and that’s that. I pray something drastic happens to her to wake her up before she dies in her sins, and in Judgment is departed from Almighty God.

  11. shayshay

Lord Jesus Christ, I understand why as women we should stay in our creation roles because if we don’t we can end up thinking we are men and wanting the same sex smh just sick. There is a lot of this going on in the church.

  12. Harold

Two women in leadership positions and both gay, what kind of stuff is this. The Bible is against this kind of lifestyle and they should be the first to know that..This is another sad day for the Church.

  13. ELEAZ

@TIWANDA…..THEY WENT OUT FROM US BECAUSE THEY WERE NOT PART OF US….DONT WORRY

  14. Florence

Well this is what happens when sometimes when people listen to SATANS. voice and not Gods. They are lead astray. She needed to step down before she exposed her sin. She didn’t have a husband so she became the husband

  15. Rosettastone

As a woman I agree with you. God put an order to things for a reason. Some of us are gifted in the Word, so, teach your kids first and share with your Sisters. Let the men teach the men. A woman should not be leading a flock unless a global disease broke out killing every able man on the planet. We’re too easily fooled and led astray. God was specific in Corinthians, we can’t pick and choose parts of the Bible we don’t like. His ways are higher than our ways.

Truly there must have been a lot of deception for quite some time for her to carry on a relationship with another woman let alone into marriage while she’s preaching from the pulpit. I commend her congregation’s loyalty to this woman, but not their foolishness. Loyalty above all should be to THE Lord Jesus Christ and his Word.

  16. george harrison

Wow. She chosen a sinful lifestyle over the cross of Christ. A lifestyle that is condemn by the word of God. And when did she find the time to run around town and sin with her partner when as pastor she was to preach and oversee the souls of those in her congregation. Wow, a tragedy to see a pastor fall into apostasy.

  17. MeelaSuite

Complete foolishness. What’s the point in creating a board that won’t regard or discern the things of God? Doesn’t matter how many titles you have or what committees you are on if you can’t hear God or follow His word. She didn’t want to divide the church? She divided them when she started to preach and reside over a church. She divided when she decided to disobey God with no intent of repentance. She has no idea how this can hurt member’s relationship and understanding of God. I pray God helps set the record straight to bring truth and remove and damage done. To think, it’s only going to get worse.

  18. Kimberly

It breaks my heart to see news like this. Sadly, I think this woman knew exactly what she was doing in coming forward with her sinful union. She effectively caused a rift in the church and caused division which only exacerbates the situation. Those who want to follow her have been so deceived, I hope and pray that the damage is not irreparable.

    Sad indeed!

  19. Allen Phillips

This is yet another way that the Devil has been able to infiltrate the church with false leaders who have their own agenda. Most churches don’t condone women in the pulpit yet alone a gay woman in the pulpit. Again this is yet another example of the Devil showing that a church can be successful without following God’s principles. Remember the Devil himself is a homosexual so what is really going on?

  20. Usher Ottikan

wish i had something nice to say ’bout this lady, something like “i’ll be praying for her”. i PITY her and her so-called “fellow-bishop” she in a r/shp with. God surely will JUDGE them. maybe then, and only then, will their stupidity leave their brains.

  21. Laurie Potter

Without an understanding of basic scripture how was she allowed to be in leadership? That is what Paul warns against in the New Testament. Gay and Christian Leader are oxymorons. The bible is clear, homosexuality is wrong and a sin. To attempt to keep homosexuality in your christian life is to desire to continue to commit sin rather than overcome it. It is a sin, like others, but our goals as christians is to work daily to grow closer to Christ and not “practice” sin. That is why homosexuality cannot be embraced, accepted and “blessed” in the marriage ceremony, anymore than a mafia hitmans lifestyle be made an exception for, he simply must choose another profession if he wants Christ. THAT is the choice we all must make. We all have sins that we are more drawn to than others…Jesus tells us to choose. Him or us. People that practice homosexuality have that choice to make. They can’t have it both ways.. Period. A sexual relationship is not a requirement in life. Of either sex. Its a simple choice, Jesus, or sin. The world has made this a “big” confusing debate, it really isnt one, its simple. The big problem is anyone attaining leadership in Gods true church while a practicing homosexual….

    1. snooop1e

The Bible is clear that divorce and remarriage is adultery, how many Pastors have been married multiple times? I bet you have a Bishop, Pastor, Deacon or Elder in your church who has been divorced and remarried? Why do you accept his adultery? Just curious? Seems like you make acceptions for certain sins and condemn others for theirs….

  22. Paula Richards

Ladies and gentlemen, for those of us who know the Word of God, read it, study it, declare it, and apply it to our lives – THIS is why God is going to have to destroy the earth and its wicked inhabitants at the end of the age. Read the Book of Revelation. The spirit of deception has been unleashed upon the whole earth, that is why we must pray daily for God’s grace to preserve us, so that we may continually and daily walk in the light of truth and the way of holiness. May this woman truly come to a place of repentance and may the spirit of deception be removed from her soul.

  23. Patricia

A woman Bishop? Not God’s order. Just a whole lot of wrongness. satan loves to try and mess with God’s order of things. Perhaps she thinks that she is a man. Perverted spirit…pride spirit…spirit of rejection…and on and on. satan is having him a field day. This is just so disgusting. My spirit was already grieved…by all the other garbage that I have read. Lord please have mercy on your people.

  24. GospelBasS

Another occassion to pray for the continued mercies of God and the repentance of hardened hearts towards the Word!!

  25. Pastor DL Foster

what a lowdown hypocrite. If she didnt want to “split the church” she should have just kept her ungodly marriage to herself and skee-daddled. She knew the announcement ALONE would cause division and thats exactly what she wanted. Hirelings are always in it for themselves. The sheep and the word of the Lord are very low on their priority list. Its unfortunate that whoever was over her, didnt discern her sinful lifestyle and PUT HER OUT like the bible said to do until she repented.

  26. Taura Helms

Not to offend anyone, but I have found no Biblical basis for a woman to be a minister, bishop etc. in the first place. Maybe someone can give me a little more insight since I am still reading and understanding the Bible. If she were heterosexual I could not find a scripture that states that a woman is allowed to preach. I’m hoping that I don’t get attacked for saying so as I have just made an observation. I also recall Pastor Craige speaking on this in one of the recent Truth Behind Hip Hop Series (I forgot which one since I have almost all of the DVD’s) where a woman preacher shut down a convention center and the EPA had to come and clean up from the vomit as a result of the Kundalini Spirit. Again, I could be wrong but I have not found a scriptural basis for her position and its sad because she may have confused a lot of people, some who genuinely want to be saved. Those are the people I feel sorry for.

    1. rorie

yes there are several verses that speak directly to this matter . ! tim 2:11 and the same book the 3rd chapter the first verse clearly states that if a man desires that position that HE desires a good thing this is a personal pronoun for the man in this case and then God locks it in when you read further that he must be the husband of one wife and he should be able to take care of his house as well as the church

    2. Don Reid

You will not get attacked because you are absolutely correct. It dose speak of being a bishop and the word says HE must have a good reputation, He must be able to have control and authority in HIS home, not her but Him as In man. It’s the word of God that many have strayed from and now this is the outcome, confusion.

    3. Tami

You’re not wrong. 1Timothy 2:12-14 and 3:1-13 state this clearly. Please don’t let anyone tell you otherwise. If you’re like me, try to keep notes as you study the bible. I’m sure you will find yourself going back to the very passages the more you read the bible. =)

  27. Maxine

I’m am so grieved with the Holy Spirit about this. Our leaders are constantly turning their backs on God and choosing to follow their own way. They will pay for it in the end. The enemy’s convinced them otherwise. So grieved.

  28. Damion

Clearly she doesn’t regard the Word of God in her personal life. It clearly shows

  29. Doug Miller

A wolf in sheep’s clothing. This really shows the times that we are in. We as Christians need to stand up, reveal this and oppose it for all to see. Let folks see Christians opposing this and letting them know that this isn’t us.

  30. Fred Rochester

She loved sin more than she loved God. I didn’t call homosexuality a sin. God did and I agree with God. Homosexuality is an abomination.

  31. Theresa Caldwell

She failed her test! This was a test to see if she loved the world more then what she was preaching! The Gospel!

    1. vanessa

Theresa, I believe you may be right. Whatever the test and however it looks in our own lives, may we pass with flying colors (no pun intended).

    2. snooop1e

There’s a TEST?!!! What happened to be saved by Faith Alone?

  32. Shawanna Brown

    Wtw eew!

  33. rachelmm05

This lady has violated Gods word on so many levels till its a literal shame. She didnt resign b/c she is in sin, she resigns b/c she dont want people talking about her. How many will call this lady on her sin and opposition to the Word or will people just warmly embrace her as if her lesbianism is but a light thing? Woe to those who take pleasure in darkness or support those who do!

  34. Jonta

The sad part about this is that people are still willing to follow her after she admitted the life style in which she was living. That is a complete contradiction of the Word of God, to live one way and to preach something else. Eph 4:17-20 tells us not to walk as heathens, having understanding darkened, being alienated from the life of God through ignorance, who being past feelings, given themselves to lasciviousness, But ye have no so learned Christ.(all paraphrased due to length of scriptures). This tells me she didnt learn Christ as the scriptures state. How can the people still say that they are willing to follow this pastor(respect of her position) when she openly rejected God’s word, Jesus and the Holy Spirit. Eph 4:30 tells us not to grieve the Holy Spirit. Is this not Grievous to the Holy Spirit.

  35. Tara

I just don’t understand this. The Word tells me that if I’m doing something to offend, stumble my brother I should stop. Her choice to be ina lesbian marriage is clearly causing strife and division, yet instead of stopping what she is doing she chooses to walk about from the problems she has caused. Her love for another woman is more important to her than her church, or the confusion she has creted or the people she is hurting. My goodness. I’m praying for this situation.

  36. Tiwanda

So instead of repenting and lining your lifestyle with God’s word, she decided to toss the word and continue the relationship…hmm OK. It’s good she stepped down cause with that twisted situation, she was probably doing more harm than good.

  37. Don Reid

At times like this I struggle not to let any hatred come forth from my lips or my heart, but she is a wicked and demonic devil. She is wicked beyond words. A pure wolf in sheep’s clothing. These kinds of liars and pretentious devils I hate and pray for the wrath of God to fall upon her. She knows it’s wrong and a grievous sin, that is why 1- she kept it secret and 2 – lying to the flock. This is demonic and straight from the devil. I pray God’s wrath and destruction on her miserable and perverted life.
